Artificial Joints or Heart Valve

When visiting our office, you will be asked if you have an artificial joint or artificial heart valve. It is important for us to know this medical information because your doctor may want you to take an antibiotic before your dental visit. This will be referred to as a premedication. Please discuss with your medical doctor if they want you to take a premedication before your dental visit.

What is a premedication?

This is an antibiotic that is prescribed by your doctor to be taken for your dental visit.

Why is a premedication important?

During a dental visit, some procedures may cause disruption of the gingival mucosa. Because there are many types of bacteria in the oral cavity, some of these bacteria may enter the bloodstream and adhere to an artificial joint or artificial heart valve. Generally, the bodies immune system is able to fight off the bacteria before an infection develops, but due to the possibility of the bacteria evading the immune system, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic to take as a premedication before your dental visit to help prevent infection. This is especially important if you also have diabetes or decreased immune system.

How long will I need to take my premeditation before a dental visit?

Please discuss this with your medical doctor as every situation is different.
